Islands in Malaysia To Visit

For the Hippie: Perhentians Island

The Perhentian Islands are two islands named Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island) and Pulau Perhentian Besar (Large Perhentian Island). The Malay name Perhentian is translated as “place to stop” and this is exactly what these two islands were for traders traveling between Malaysia and Bangkok in years gone by. These islands are still a gorgeous place to stop and rest today, albeit for tourists disconnecting from the stress and routine of everyday life and not for weary seafaring traders.

For The Wildlife Lover: Tioman Island

Tioman is in Pahang (“East Coast”) within the Mersing Marine Park, which contains fewer commercial islands such as Sibu Island. The primary gateway Mersing is in Johor (“South”). Tioman’s beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie South Pacific as “Bali Hai“. In the 1970s, Time magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands. The densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited.

Also it is surrounded by numerous white coral reefs, making it a haven for scuba divers from around the region. The natural environment and wildlife of the place will leave you stunned and it is one of the major factors contributing to its popularity. The first mammals to greet you will be the giant monitor lizards!

For the Heritage-Seekers: Penang Island

Look no farther than Penang if culture, history and tradition is what you seek to find on your Malayan holiday. And this is topped by the fact that it is also one of the best places to sample the local delicacies of Southeast Asia.
